At St. Vincent's, we are proud to be part of the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) programme, which transforms playtimes into rich, purposeful and enjoyable experiences for every child. OPAL helps us create exciting and inclusive outdoor spaces where children can explore, build, imagine and problem-solve through high-quality play. This approach supports children’s physical health, emotional wellbeing, creativity and social development, while also promoting cooperation and resilience. With OPAL, our playtimes are calmer, happier and more active, helping every child return to the classroom ready to learn.

Over the next 18 months, we will be integrating the OPAL programme to enhance the quality of play for all children. We will begin by carefully planning and preparing, developing policies, and creating a clear vision for how OPAL will work in our school. This phased approach ensures that every step is thoughtfully implemented, laying the foundation for exciting, inclusive, and meaningful play experiences that will benefit our whole school community.

To support this initiative, we are seeking donations of clean, safe, and usable items (NOT broken) that will enhance our play provision. To help with organisation, we will be requesting specific donations each week. The schedule is as follows:

Small world donations - ongoing

• Dolls (Babies), dolly prams, dolly accessories (small baby clothes, bibs, bottles etc.) - Due to the KS1 gate at drop-off - week beginning 28th September 2026
• Metal toy cars - Due to the KS2 gate at drop-off - week beginning 28th September 2026

We are delighted to be working closely with our PTA, who have been amazing in raising funds to bring OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) to our school. Opal Newsletter

Welcome to our OPAL newsletter! The primary goal of our OPAL initiative is to enrich children's break times by transforming outdoor play into a dynamic space for creativity, social connection, physical health, and self-directed exploration through open-ended play and loose parts. Through this newsletter, we will be sharing regular updates to keep you connected with our progress, offer peeks into the inventive ways our pupils are playing and learning, highlight upcoming projects or requested recycled materials, and share practical ways you can support vibrant outdoor play both at school and at home.

Opal Play Assemblies

The primary purpose of an Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) play assembly is to introduce, set expectations for, and celebrate our school's play environment so that every child can experience safe, inclusive, and creative outdoor activities. These assemblies serve as a collaborative space to introduce new playground zones or "loose parts" equipment (such as tyres, crates, or mud kitchens) and actively involve pupils in evaluating risks so they can manage their own safety while taking healthy risks.

By gathering the whole school, staff can reinforce key values like cooperation and respect, highlight pupil voice, and recognise positive behaviours. To keep the whole community informed, these assemblies take place every couple of weeks, and the accompanying slide decks are uploaded directly to this page so parents, staff, and pupils can always stay up to date on the latest messages and playground updates.
