Year 2

Welcome to Year 2!

Year 2 class trip to the London Zoo!

Our topic this summer term is Amazing Africa so we have been learning all about different types of animals and their habitats. We had a wonderful time exploring and for some of our children it was the first time they had ever seen animals up close!

WORLD BOOK DAY

What a wonderful day! Everyone dressed up as their favourite characters and discussed all the amazing books we regularly enjoy. We did a whole school best dressed competition, wrote character descriptions, did book reviews and got to enjoy other teachers visiting our class to read us some books.

R.E

Our topic this term is Sacramental people.  We have been looking at where we see God in our actions and in everything we do. A long time ago, God was present physically with us through Jesus. Today, we have to look deeper into our own world and think about how he is still present even though we can't see him.

Chapel time!

This week in chapel we discussed 'reflection' and the reading from the Gospel of Luke chapter 4.

We discussed that today, through the power of Holy Spirit, Jesus is still with us! He is with us and he wants us to share this Good News with others through our everyday words and actions. Jesus wants us to show our faith in God through sharing love, kindness and forgiveness in our everyday words and actions. We discussed that we should regularly share Good News with others. We all took turns to discuss our Good News for this week.

Collective worship!

Our first collective worship groups started presenting this week. They had the theme of 'love'. They really enjoyed being able to step into the role of 'teacher' and be able to direct the learning and experience for the class. We are looking forward to seeing the rest of the collective worship groups each Monday.

Today, Year 2 had their second collective worship lesson and it was on 'friendship'. We had wonderful power points, circle times, music, a friendship test and some awards being given out. What a wonderful way to start our first day back after our half term break.

Our third collective worship was on "Sorry". The children discussed why we say sorry, and the different ways we can say sorry. They read a bible story about forgiveness and listen to a song that was about saying sorry. They led the class activity and asked the class to reflect on mistakes they may have made and why they are sorry for those words or actions.

Our collective worship on 'respect' discussed all the different types of respect we show, and how to respect yourself. The 'respect' group handed out challenge cards to some of the class for them to complete during the day and they also read a lovely story.
Next we had a collective worship on ' Charity'. The group did a lovely starting prayer, as well as a charity game and a catching song to learn. Well done to those children to choose to donate what they could.
This week we had a collective worship on' belonging'. It included a story about Noah's Ark, and the children had to think about what they would bring on their ' St Vincent's Ark.
Today our collective worship on " Family" had a lot lovely activities! The group started by introducing how to say 'family' in another language. They then shared a song they had written themselves, and the class and teacher were very impressed. Together the class then played some hangman games with ' family' themed words. We continued on with reading our biblical references and we ended the lessons with a family  word search while listening (on repeat as per the request of the class) to ' We are family'. The group gave the class a mission: to do or say something for your family to show them how much you care.

Science

Our topic this term has been materials. We have been looking at what materials would be suitable to make boats, based on their properties. Before making our boats we had to test our materials to see which ones were able to sink or float. The children then had to discuss and design what they needed to create their boats.

Testing if our boats float or sink!

Testing speeds and making helicopters!

This term we are exploring scientific inquiry. We have been investigating how changing variables effect the speed of paper.  We discuss our aims of the experiment, the method and make individual and class predictions.  We then complete the experiment and record the results. In this lesson we are testing the speed of scrunched up paper and flat paper.  Whose paper achieved the best speed and why?

MATH

Multiplication arrays!

This week we have been learning about multiplication arrays. We have had a practical lesson where we were able to explore how multiplication arrays represent our timetables.

Dividing!

Year 2 are now learning about how to do division. We have started by working out the link between multiplication and division. We have been sharing between the groups that we are dividing by and remembering our inverse.

GAMES

In our year 2 games lessons we have been practising our flexibility and core strength though 'Cosmic Yoga'. Check out our Cosmic photos!
